People with Disabilities

I am getting a little tired of people treating me like a six year old. Just today I had someone asking me whether I go to day camp. Are you kidding me? I go to a University studying Adult Basic Education English and then in January I am taking Psychology 100.

I'm speaking my mind here so bare with me. Is it so hard to treat everyone equally these days? Why is it different talking to "Bob" who doesn't have a disability and talking to "Matt" who does. If someone has any reason for it then I think we as a society are going backward and not forward. Accepting people for who they are needs to be the next step going forward. People may not like me for saying this but it's no different from a white person talking to a black person.

Sure people with disabilities have their challenges, we all do but that does not excuse others to feel sorry for them or to talk down to them. We are all people and we all have feelings. Most that I've talked to say that people are ignorant and yes; maybe that's true but it's still inexcusable from my standpoint.

If you are having a conversation with the person with the disability, don't talk to the person they are with. it annoys the crap out of us...or at least me.

  1. I hear ya brother! I'm tired of STUPID...there is a lot of that in Elko! lol One of my friends here in Elko who is a quad gets that all the time! He and I have had many conversations and you can see, when a person who doesn't know him, walks into a room where we are both at the first thing most people do is talking down to him like he's got some 'head' issue. They start talking to me as if I'm his caretaker! It pisses me off! It's just judgment for dumb! These people that talk down to you are just ignorant...THEY CAN'T HELP IT!! It's unfortunate for sure because I understand how it can be annoying as HELL to be treated as if you've got no brain. Just know you have many around you who know different...and we all love you!! :) I hope this message finds you in a better place than when you wrote it! :) Miss you kid! Chat soon!
