Airline travel traveling with a disability

I've always found travelling by air to be an exciting adventure. You just never know what you are going to get, whether it's when you get to the airport, going through Security, or just getting on the plane. It is even more stressful travelling with a power wheelchair, which has two batteries weighing at least 50 lbs.

Canadian airlines must adhere to strict accessibility regulations outlined by the Canadian Transport Agency (CTA) and the Canadian Human Rights Act. These regulations require airlines to adequately assist people with disabilities and their medical equipment. Typically, North American airports have a service that offers assistance to those with disabilities. However, these services lack training and can hurt people with disabilities.

The main issue is with the airlines and the misuse of power wheelchairs. These wheelchairs, for a lot of people, are not toys, and they are used by people with disabilities to get from point A to point b. Power wheelchairs are legs for a lot of people. I describe my power wheelchair as my legs because I cannot walk without holding on to something, or I will fall on my face. I have done this, and it really hurts. Yet, almost all Canadian Airlines treat these power wheelchairs as luggage they can throw around.

Air travel is not accessible in the sense of medical equipment. I hear almost every day that people are getting kicked off flights or their equipment is damaged and/or lost, causing a lot of anxiety and leaving people without any mobility options. It is absurd that this keeps happening.

Air travel is an absolutely daunting experience for those with disabilities, especially if travelling by yourself. However, if you can do it on your own, it is paramount to keep doing it, even though it can be an absolute disaster. Canadian airlines must go to Ottawa to explain to the federal government and the CTA why so many accessibility complaints have been filed against them.

It is time that Airlines are held accountable for their mistakes against people with disabilities. Everyone deserves to be treated with respect and dignity. This includes those with medical equipment. I really wish I could say this kind of thing was in the past, but I can't because the sad reality is that we have so much more work that has to be done to make these airlines more accessible. The only way airlines will get onboard is by more people with disabilities travelling and forcing the airlines to make changes so everyone has the same opportunity. It is time to keep fighting for equality.

The perfect minivan

Hey guys, I have to be honest and say that the last post I wrote "Two's company, three's a crowd" took a number of years for me to publish as I wasn't into writing for quite some time. A big part of this was because I found out that I was iron deficient and I didn't have much energy. Now, I feel as good as I have ever been in my adult life and it feels good.

Now, that's out of the way, I'd like to get back to telling you stories and my lived experiences. After all, my blog is now called "Shayne's mixed bag". There's a reason for this. It's so that I have more to write about, rather than keeping it on one topic. Anyway, read on to find out partly what I've been up to for a few years. I have been working for a non-profit organization for about 5 years or so, working with people with Autism, Down Syndrome, and other disabilities. As much as I love the work I do and it's rewarding, I am feeling like a change is coming and I'm hoping that change will be in the IT sector as I love my technology...my girlfriend gets annoyed by all that I buy as she is not into tech that much. In the past two years, I've focused my attention on getting myself into a new fully accessible van. This process has been very slow due to the pandemic, which has slowed everything down. First and foremost, I took a medical leave off work due to medical reasons. This lasted about five or six months before returning to work through the Zoom platform. While it has been nice working from home, I've definitely learned that I would prefer to be out in the community as much as I can talking to people and networking. I'm sure most people feel this way. I started working with a non-profit organization in BC, called Neil Squire Society.

They offer a program called "WorkBC Assistive Technology" which helps people with disabilities get the equipment they need in order to remove barriers in the workforce. This program has great intentions, but it falls short in a situation that the world is in right now. The program would assist me in getting upwards of $40,000 for the conversion I had my first consultation meeting with them in 2019 to discuss what I do for work and what kinds of barriers I face getting to and from work. Once I got a letter of employment, they needed my financials, medical documentation, policies from work, and so on. As I was super excited about this process I got all the documentation for them as quickly as I could. It still took about two weeks or so. After everything was in order and I explained the reasons why I needed a wheelchair accessible vehicle, they asked me to get pre-approved for a loan. I called and asked two companies for a loan. One said no, but the other said "yes, we will get you a car loan." I was approved...Yay!

A short while after, I was directed to go to a rehab centre where we needed to discuss whether I need a rear-entry or a side-entry conversion. As they get the funding through the BC government, they will go with the cheaper route, almost every time. The side-entry conversion is $40,000, whereas the rear-entry conversion cost $17,000. From a government's perspective, it makes sense for them to pay $17,000 for the rear-entry conversion so they can pay for two conversions, instead of one. The side-entry conversion costs $40,000. From a person that has to pay nearly $60,000 for a vehicle, it makes sense to get what I need/want. I don't know about you, but I want to be beside the driver, instead of in the rear-view mirror.

The rehab centre and I have been working together to determine which conversion I'd like. By this point in the process, I made up my mind which conversion I want and I wouldn't get anything less. For this to happen, we needed to figure out the reasons behind wanting/needing the side-entry conversion that relates to barriers getting to and from work. This has been super challenging, but we have what we need in order to submit the application to the Ministry. Right now, I am waiting for the rehab centre to send me some documentation to review before sending the entire application off to the Ministry. After this process is finished, I'll wait for the Ministry to review and approve my funding application. To remove even more of a barrier, I am asking for your generosity to help the fundraising goal of mine. Thanks for reading and I hope you'll consider donating

Two's company, three's a crowd...

This is a story you won't want to miss. It's a story about one of my soccer-related trips to Berkeley, California that has people stunned every time my buddy and I tell it.

Each retelling leaves a negative but funny taste in my mouth, it's a story that I will probably tell for a very long time. It's one that may get you questioning whether or not it's worth it to take a third wheel on a road trip with you to save a little bit of cash or one that answers the question of if two's company, is three a crowd? I now understand why that statement makes so much sense. Dylan and I went to a coffee shop for what they call open mic every Thursday night at 9 and we met this guy named Bob. At first, Bob seemed to be a cool guy and seemed fun to hang out with at the coffee shop. So we decided that it would be fun (and economical) to invite him along, to share the fun and the costs, but when it came down to the trip, the problems began before we even left.
I was sick with a cough when the trip began, leaving me quite exhausted. Due in part to Bob's schedule, and our accommodating spirit, we seemed to be very limited as to what day we could leave: Dylan and I wanted to leave a day earlier and take a nice slow drive down, Bob wanted to leave a day later, and so we left a day later. The worst was yet to come. When we went to pick him up from his place, Dylan and I were excited to get on the road and start this journey, Bob got all his bags, including his camera bag in my van.
He got in the backseat and the first words that started the trip were whining and groaning "this seat belt is digging into my abdomen." Was he trying to be funny? I can't remember. We start our trip down to Berkeley when Bob caught on to the way Dylan and I were making fun of one another. By the second day of the trip, Bob tried to get in on the fun by directing insults at me. Normally I would not have taken it personally, but when I responded with snappy comebacks, he did not like it whatsoever and said that I was mean for saying what I said. It was clear that Bob was angered by any response to his insults, he could dish it out but not take it. I was supposed to shut up and take the abuse, like some low life person with a disability from hundreds of years ago.
When we finally got to the hotel in Berkeley, I was a little tired of Bob because it was a Friday and he would not shut up on the trip down. Bob has an endless supply of conversation topics, and when they run out, they begin again: camping gear, the Beat poets, another road trip down the coast, camera lenses, the great redwood forests, and a bit about music. This would not stop until we dropped him off at home at the end of the trip except for brief periods of sleep.
On Saturday morning, I was not feeling particularly well and didn't feel like eating much even though breakfast was included in the cost of the hotel but I sat at the table with Dylan and Bob. Since we were so close to San Francisco it would be silly not to go explore and do some cool stuff in the city. I honestly thought I made myself very clear about the trip and being there to play power soccer and hanging out with my team: Saturday and Sunday were devoted to my power soccer tournament, while the rest of the trip was flexible. Bob did not seem to understand this and continuously asked both Bob and me when we wanted to meet up that night but he needed an answer.
Finally, Dylan and I told him "Okay, why don't we do 6 somewhere in San Francisco?" We all agreed...yay! Bob suggested a famous book store that once printed the early work of the Beat poets as an excellent meeting point. Our eyes rolled, but the topic was officially settled in Bob's mind. Apart from being pissed off, late, sick, and tired, the tournament was frustrating. My equipment was not in the best playing condition and neither was I.
We came back from my games to the hotel when I saw my teammates were by the pool, hanging out with some beer. Dylan said he had to go back to the room to get some stuff ready to go meet Bob in San Fran. When Dylan came back down he couldn't find me. In the few minutes he was gone, I had a really good time: I was handed 2 beers and landed next to the pool having a laugh with the girls (and guys) in the sunny sunshine.
Dylan eventually wandered in the right direction and he asked if I still wanted to go meet Bob in San Fran or bail and hang out with my team. I told Dylan we could go after I finish my beers. After another 30 minutes, Dylan asked me again if we should go. By this point, I was already pissed off at Bob for how he treated me on the way down and said to Dylan that all I want to do right now is hang out with my friends, relax, go eat somewhere, and jump in the pool which is exactly what I landed up doing.
In the morning we discussed the form of communication we were all going to use and it was by emailing Bob. Dylan did that twice because I couldn't make up my mind within a 15 minute time span but Bob wasn't in a wireless place and didn't get the emails for 2 hours. When he got back to the hotel, he was absolutely pissed off that we never showed up and went to the room while my teammates and I were about to head out for a bite to eat.
The drive back from Berkley was absolutely horrible. Midway, through the trip, I was contemplating flying home as I didn't want to be in the car for nearly 20 hours with Bob. Bob wanted to take the 101 highway which is the highway going up and down the West Coast, whereas I wanted to be done with the trip and take the number 5 highway as it is about four hours faster to get home. Bob wasn't backing down and started arguing about how he came with us and he was paying for 1/3 of the trip.
At this point, I was done arguing and I just wanted to get home at this point. On the way back I was in the passenger seat and Dylan and Bob switched positions being the driver along the entire road trip. Along the drive up the coast, Bob needed to stop every 20 - 25 minutes to take a picture. If you have ever driven up or down the 101 highway, you'll know that all you can see is the ocean as we are on the coast. By this point in our trip, I was even more exhausted, sick, and tired from all the complaining and whining. We stop for a bite to eat at a burger joint and gas.
We sit at a table and ordered. When the food came, we were all super hungry. I knew I had to play nice to Bob as Dylan and him were taking turns driving my van. Our order came and we started eating.    Traditionally, burgers come with fries and that's what I got. At this burger joint, there are these round Ketchup bottles that we could squeeze to get the desired amount of Ketchup. I underestimated how far the Ketchup would squirt out of the bottle and quite a bit of it ended on Dylan's lap. Was Dylan mad? No, he wasn't. In fact, Dylan was laughing and getting napkins to clean up.
While this was happening, Bob was trying to wrestle the ketchup bottle out of my hand as if I had squirted Ketchup on him. I guess he underestimated how strong I was and didn't succeed, so he goes up from the table and went outside for a break. When Bob was outside, Dylan and I were eating our lunch and I asked Dylan if he had my van keys. He told me that he did as I was scared that if Bob had my keys that he would take off leaving us behind with no way of getting home. I was super apologetic to Dylan, but he said "it's not a big deal, really.
" He also asked me if I knew what Ketchuup was made out of. I said "No, I have no idea. What?" I forget what he told me, but he made me feel better about the whole situation. When we get back to Vancouver, I was so happy to be home as I was furious with Bob and I couldn't imagine going on another trip like that in my entire life.
Our first stop, dropping Bob off at home. "Thank god", I said when Bob was out of my van and Dylan shut the doors to end the journey dropping me off at home. Dylan and I couldn't believe how the trip ended up being. Dylan was super apologetic as he thought it was all his fault. I explained to Dylan that it wasn't his fault.
We invited Bob on this trip in order to save money and help us save money. Throughout the last 30 minutes of our drive, we were talking about what went wrong. For the life of us, we couldn't figure it out. We were guessing as to the reasoning behind what went wrong. We never found the answers we were looking for and the story was never answered. I went back to open mic a few times after that trip where I saw Bob, but I never talked to Bob again.

Brazil Trip 2014

As some of you may know I am a PowerChair Football athlete. I am seeking support so I can go to Brazil for a PowerChair Football tournament. This competition is very important because it is a qualifier for the 2015 World Cup. The Canadian team is very short on athletes due to the time and financial  commitments involved in playing the sport. The cost of going to the tournament is $5,000 per athlete; this includes flights, accommodation, meals, and transport for both athlete and attendant. If I am not able to come up with the coin it may result in the entire team having to pull out. Unfortunately our sport receives no provincial or federal funding. The athletes must come up with the funds on their own through family support, fundraising and donations. I've been able to save some of my own money and my family has pitched in what they can but I'm still short almost $3500. Any donation, big or small, would be greatly appreciated.

Long time, no talk

I am aware that the last blog post was in October and for people who are excited to read what I have to say, I am sorry for the massive delay. The only way for me to start actively writing on a regular basis, though is by posting more than just my writing, but for my first post, I thought the first way to start off is by telling everyone what has been going on.

As some of my viewers may know, I went to University to take Psychology 100; I also took Adult Basic Education English 041 which is the equivalent to grade 11 so now the journey continues at University where I am taking Child Development Psychology and Human Geography which should be very interesting. Since I have a bad memory, you could imagine that Psyc would be a pretty hard course for me to have taken, but as people have said to me in the past, nothing is easy in life and I know that from experience. As for English, the same principal applies for me where I have to work my ass off to get good marks. My goal for this term is to finish my English 12, getting a B or an A- and that alone is going to be tough for me but I am striving to work hard trying to achieve it but it's proving to be difficult for me to do as my reading comprehension is not that great.

I am still playing PowerChair Football (formally known as power soccer). I have been able to get a different wheelchair specifically for PowerChair Football which is not the best soccer chair out there anymore. If someone has between $7000 and $9000, they can get the top of the line soccer chair which is called the strikeforce chair which is able to perform at an international level. According to people that I am/have been speaking with down in the states, whoever does not have a strikeforce chair won't be on the American team going to the next world cup in 2015. My soccer chair has put me out about $3000 so far and I have just one more essential upgrade that I am waiting on which is hopefully being developed and that is the motors. I think the motors I have are pretty good but when I go play with people who have the strike force chairs that have better motors, I do see a difference

As for moving out on my own, I am so excited and can't wait for this opportunity. I was supposed to move in January but there was a "disaster" (fire) in the place they were going to offer me, so my vacancy was delayed. As some may know, I am pretty impulsive and don't like to wait for things so I have been finding this to be difficult to deal with but it will be surreal when it finally happens and since I got pretty much all I need besides a sofa and some tables, I would consider myself to be pretty set for when I move in. Depending on my finances, people may have to bring their own lawn chairs for when they come over...haha; I actually don't think that will happen but keep it in mind. They have said to me that a place will be available in the "spring" months so it should be soon.

A few days later...yay

So I was going to the doctors to go get a refill for my medication from UNIVERSITY on the bus with my music on and jamming away when approximately 10 minutes away from my stop my chair started tilting backwards in the ironing board of the bus. I tried to stop it of course, by pressing the button for the tilt and my chair would not go down and only in the up direction. The people on people on the bus were asking me what they could do and how they could help and I told them there's nothing that can be done right there and then so I tilted all the way to the point that I was looking at the roof of the bus. I called Motion Speciaties and they asked where I was and I said "I'll be at the community centre" and they said "Let me call the guy and see where he is at and I will call you right back." The thing I have trouble with is when I look up above in a sitting position and no way to get down is that I get tense and stiff. Two people dis engaged my motors to push me off and since I couldn't stay in my chair like that they had to lift me out of my chair on to the bus stop bench was good.

The technician called and I couldn't answer cause I was being lifted at the time so I called him back after I said thank you so much to the people who helped me because the driver was running late and when I called the technician back I asked for him to come to the community centre. He said "Sure" and he confirmed the address of the community centre. I then sat there for about 5 or so minutes before calling one of the youth workers and asked if he was busy and he said "Are you stuck?" I said " yea, I am, would you be able to come and give me a hand getting over to the community centre?" About 5 minutes later, I saw a bus and I knew that it would most likely be him and it was with another youth worker. When we got on the bus we decided that it would be better for me to go home so I called the technician to let him know that I'll be home instead. When we got to my house he showed up about 2 minutes after us and started working on my chair. The youth workers helped me get in the house and I said "Thanks, although it's the first time but it will probably not be the last". They both laughed and they left. As they walked out the door I said `Thanks` again.

The technician then pushed my chair inside and continued working on my chair. 15 or 20 minutes later he discovered something might be wrong with the tilt control box so he gave me two options. He could disconnect the tilt all together or take it to the shop. It was a difficult decision because I am getting way to heavy to keep dragging myself around the house but I decided that he should take it in to the shop. He explained that the Service department would call me tomorrow and let me know what`s going on with it and what needs to be done so now I am waiting to see what the outcome of my chair being fixed. After he left, I called my doctors office to tell the receptionist that I wasn`t going to make my appointment because of a problem with my chair. She was okay with it.

People with Disabilities

I am getting a little tired of people treating me like a six year old. Just today I had someone asking me whether I go to day camp. Are you kidding me? I go to a University studying Adult Basic Education English and then in January I am taking Psychology 100.

I'm speaking my mind here so bare with me. Is it so hard to treat everyone equally these days? Why is it different talking to "Bob" who doesn't have a disability and talking to "Matt" who does. If someone has any reason for it then I think we as a society are going backward and not forward. Accepting people for who they are needs to be the next step going forward. People may not like me for saying this but it's no different from a white person talking to a black person.

Sure people with disabilities have their challenges, we all do but that does not excuse others to feel sorry for them or to talk down to them. We are all people and we all have feelings. Most that I've talked to say that people are ignorant and yes; maybe that's true but it's still inexcusable from my standpoint.

If you are having a conversation with the person with the disability, don't talk to the person they are with. it annoys the crap out of us...or at least me.
