Oh, no!!!

Last Sunday night was the last PowerChair Football practice of the summer and since I was busy for all the others, it was my only one. I have to admit, I was a little rusty because before that I didn't play or practice for a good month. So, I missed many of my spin kicks that I should of had and just wasn't feeling my game. When we were kicking the ball around my chair started making sort of a grinding noise and I said to myself "I wonder what's going on". My teammate/friend also noticed but I didn't think it was anything big. We started playing a practice game and towards the end, my chair would only move in one direction, it started going right even though I was trying to go straight, at the same time it was making that grinding noise so the referee, Ben said "we're done for the night" in a really funny tone. I'm saying to myself "How am I supposed to get home from a street past McDonalds which is where my teammate and his mom drops me off to get home. I had to call my mom to come pick me up at this point because I knew that I would never make it home like this. My mom asked where I was so I told her McDonalds where I needed the bathroom. You could imagine what that was like when only one side of my chair was working and the other was on and off. Anyway, I was able to make it to McDonalds probably only because his mom walked with me making sure that I would get there alright and it took me a few minutes to figure out how I was going to the washroom but eventually I was able to make it work. When I got out of McDonalds, First, I called my friend to ask if he would mind dropping by and switching the batteries from my newer chair to my older chair and he said I'll be at your place in 45 minutes I also asked if he could take me to Motion Specialties the next day for them to have a look at it, he said sure but it will have to be in the morning because he has some ladies coming in to play basketball. I said no problem, that's alright. I emailed the guy who works there telling him my situation and to expect me sometime in the morning and when I got there and showed them what was going on, he said " it's the gearbox and we would have to apply for funding and order it for you". They landed up giving me a loner chair for now until mine is fixed

  1. Hi Shayne! By the sound of what you experienced with your chair during the game, it is about time to replace its gearbox. Occasionally, one or both of the gearboxes will go bad. Replacing the gearboxes is vital. Without it, your chair cannot engage and disengage when needed since it is connected to the engine via a drive shaft.
